Wedding Skincare Tips: Achieve the Event Glow on a Budget

Days and weeks before your wedding or big event, the stress of planning might be showing up on your skin. Dry itchy patches, dark circles, puffy eyes, and a dull complexion are nothing too serious, but they can make us feel unconscious about how we’re going to look on our important day. While many of us understand the basics of skincare, there are extra steps you can take to achieve your event glow without spending a fortune.

Eat & Drink Clean

Eat and drink your way to better skin. Ask any dermatologist in Toronto, and they’ll tell you that you are what you eat. So, if you’ve been binging on salty chips, candy, chocolate, and poutine, the salt, sugar, and fat are going to have an effect on the appearance of your skin. We understand that chowing down on these highly flavoured foods is likely a result of stress, but trust us when we say that you won’t be any happier when you wake up on your wedding day to a big fat pimple on your chin.

While you should always be eating clean, try to be extra vigilant in the weeks leading up to your event or wedding. Try eating as many raw fruits and vegetables as you can, as they contain plenty of vitamins and minerals that improve the appearance of your skin, detox your body, and boost your immune system. Drink plenty of water to regulate and flush out your system, and avoid processed food, as it contains water-retaining sodium.

Avoid Hard-Core Chemical Peels Before the Wedding

We’ve all heard the wedding horror story about the woman who gets a chemical peel too close to her wedding and winds up looking like a splotchy lobster in all her photos. We’re not saying that facials aren’t beneficial, however, if you plan on giving your face a thorough treatment, be sure to get it well in advance of your wedding, at least a month before. There are also many less abrasive treatments options available.

Try a Homemade Facial

We bet if you open your kitchen cupboard right now you’d find all the ingredients you need to make an at-home facial that’s not only easy but incredibly cheap. If you want something more invasive—as in, something you shouldn’t try at home—such as a blackhead treatment, make an appointment with a professional well before your big day to avoid unwanted blotches or redness. Try these limited-ingredient facials that are safe for all skin types and give your skin a beautiful healthy glow:

  • #1: Beat 1 egg. Stir in organic honey and apply to your face for 30 minutes. Rinse off.

  • #2: Combine 1 avocado, a bit of honey, oatmeal, apple cider vinegar, and lemon juice. Mash together until avocado is smooth then apply it to your face with a brush or your fingertips. Leave for 20 minutes then rinse.

Paint Your Face Green

There is nothing more purifying, detoxifying, exfoliating, clarifying, soothing, and versatile than French green clay. Extracted from French quarries, green clay can be sold in its fine powder form or as a pre-mixed clay. Boxes of the fine powder are available at health food stores for less than $20 and provide you with more than a year’s worth of rich, silky clay. Simply combine the clay with water and stir until you have formed a paste. Blend into your skin and neck, making sure to avoid your eyes, mouth, and clothing. As the clay dries, you’ll notice it start to crack. After 15 minutes, rinse off and notice how smooth, clear, and exfoliated you feel. French green clay is safe for everyday use and will naturally restore moisture, balance your pH, and absorb nasty oils and toxins that are hiding in your pores.

Don’t Be Cheap on Sleep

Finally, one of the essential ingredients in achieving that healthy glow is proper sleep. Getting your 7–8 hours every night improves your mood, regulates your hormones and digestion, fights off sickness, improves your concentration and alertness, and makes you look and feel refreshed. Lack of sleep easily shows up on your face in the presence of dark, puffy circles under your eyes and dull skin. Be sure to stick to your bedtime to wake up on your wedding day feeling revitalized and rested.
